Valle De La Muerte y Valle De La Luna

Sunday Chase and I slept in, we were so tired from the day before that we took the morning really easy. We walked around town, Chase bought an awesome hat and we had lunch at a local Cafe called Coyote Cafe. For some reason I thought that ordering pesto pasta was a good idea, it was not! Chase had a good Churasco sandwich which is their local version of a hamburger.

After lunch we headed back to the hostel to get ready for our tour that left at 4:00. We had actually scheduled the tour for the previous day but we were so tired from the geysers that we moved it. It was a good decision because we ended up enjoying it so much more. We met at the tour company's office and headed to the same bus that we had been on the day before. It was amazing on our tour we had people from Germany, Norway, and Brasil. Our first stop on the tour was an overlook that looked out over San Pedro and the dessert.

Our second stop was the Valle de la Muerte or Valley of the Dead for the english speakers. One of the things that I found so interesting is that in this Valley there used to be water about 5 years ago but now it has all dried up. This dessert is actually the driest place in the entire world.

Chase wanted a picture of this guy because of his awesome jean vest and intense camera

After the Valle De La Muerta we headed to where the Valle De La Luna was located. Before actually going into the Valle we stopped to walk through a dried creek. It wan an interesting walk through some incredible canyons.

The very nice Norwegian woman took our picture and kept telling us to hold up the boulder so we did!

The tours we took were definitely interesting because you could tell the company was trying to make us feel like we were getting our money's worth but often that entailed many stops and things that Chase and I were not particularly interested in. We could have seen all the same things in about half the time. If we were to go back I think we might rent a car and drive around or hire a private guide for the day and just see everything.

This was one of the many stops they called the three Marys, Chase called it a waste of time.

After the three Marys we finally made it to the Valle De La Luna before sunset. We actually had to walk up a sand hill that was about 200 yards, let me tell you it was tuff everyone was huffing and puffing. It was well worth it once we got to the top because the view was beautiful. One rumor we did hear is that before the US flew to the moon they used this Valle to test the machine that cruised around the moon collecting things because the valley apparently has similar terrain to the moon. Not sure if it true but a fun fact none the less.

Luckily we found a spot away from all the people

Headed back down with the other 300 people who hiked up to watch the sunset

We got home around 8:45 and by that time we were starving, so Chase actually went and picked up a pizza and brought it back to the hostel for dinner. We loved San Pedro but one down side was that all the restaurants were the same so the food got old quickly.

  1. Awesome hat Chase :) I can't believe that a site named in my honor could be a waste of time - they should at least change the name! So glad I got to talk to you on the phone today, Merrill... skype next week!
